Life in a busy metropolitan can be full of excitement, entertainment & trance, but this city life comes with its downside too. Living in a concrete jungle can expose you to the unavoidable dust, smoke, grime, and pollution, which might lead to severe health issues. Increasing respiratory diseases, sinus problems, and allergies are all attributed to air pollution. Researches have shown that pollution and other environmental irritants pose a huge threat to your skin and are potent to wreak havoc on your scalp & hair too.

Air pollution is a complex mixture that consists of large suspended particles, small airborne particles, smoke and harmful gases which has huge adverse influences on human health. Human skin and scalp present as a biological shield against damage, however, also become one of the major targets of these stimuli, like pollutants. In recent years, exposed to pollutants are associated with hair and scalp problems, such as dryness, irritation, sensitivity, and hair loss. Recent studies have demonstrated that pollutants-induced toxic effects occur mainly through reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and inflammatory cytokine secretion.

Particulate matter (minuscule bits of soot, dust, and other grime), smoke, and gaseous pollutants settle on the hair and scalp, causing irritation, flakiness, and damage. That can manifest in multiple ways, ranging from dryness to breakage to an itchy scalp.

Things to go into your anti-air pollution hair care regime

It is imperative to take care of your hair, the way you do for your skin, particularly when you’ve got a hodge-podge of air pollutants to deal with. Luckily, there are easy things you can do to protect your hair.

  1. Stay indoors when pollution levels are high in your area. Else, wear a suitable headgear, head scarf or cap to avoid direct exposure to pollutants.
  2. Wash your hair with a mild cleanser frequently to remove the deposited particulate matters.
  3. Since pollutant levels increase 3—5 times during winter and around Diwali, take extra precautions for your hair while going out in the open. Scarfs, hats, and covers of all sorts are highly recommended.

Some Preventive Measures:

There are easy ways to protect your hair and undo the damage:

  1. Use of mild shampoo: When you are often exposed to pollutants, regular hair wash coupled with deep conditioning is recommended. Mild shampoos cleanse away deposited particulate matters and hence reduce the damaging effect of these chemicals on hair and scalp.
  2. Antioxidants to fight free radicals: Pollutants cause oxidative stress which reciprocates into excessive hair fall and hair damage. Antioxidants are able to neutralize the damage free radicals cause. Incorporating antioxidants containing products in your hair regimen is a great way to fight the impact of pollution.
  3. Cover your hair: It is always a good practice to make sure that your hair is well protected in terms of physical protection and nourishment before you step out. Keeping your head covered and your hair tied up while travelling is a good way to keep it protected.
  4. Oils and Conditioners: Coconut oil is extremely versatile and has many uses beyond eating and cooking. Coconut oil is a triglyseride of lauric acid which has a high affinity for keratin protein in the hair. Coconut oil can help repair the damage caused to hair shafts due to pollution.
